The Battle of Oporto was fought on the 12th of May 1809 between Marshal Soult and General Wellesley. British troops managed a surprize crossing of The Douro and in a four hour battle caused over 2000 Frenchmen and 58 guns to become either casualties or prisoners, [more than 1000 were already sick and wounded]. Soult was forced to retreat, while Wellesley at the cost of 123 men had crossed a river in daylight, captured a city and defeated a Marshal.
