In a nutshell

If you want good food, friendly locals and plenty of history all in the sun. Malta is the place.

A sea nymph held Odysseus captive here for 7 years. I can see why he didn't try very hard to escape.

Do this if you have time: 

Manoel Theatre, Valletta. A near perfect Georgian Theatre.

Cassa Rocca. Valletta. A man's 1790 suit and a ladies regency dress on open display.

Museum. Valletta. Go upstairs where there are some wall paintings 'copied' from Pompeii.

Citadel Rabat/Victoria Gozo. History and terrific views.

What you should know
Money: 

Euros.

Travel: 

Buses - Old but very reliable and they keep to their timetables. Always pay in loose change.

Taxis - Book them through your hotel.

Driving - Only if you really have to.

Eating: 

Fenek is rabbit, and as a stew is usually very good.

Lampuka is the 'Dolphin' fish...It is not Dolphin.

Mac Donald's is available in Valletta...[..please..!]

Pizza is well done.

Sea food is recommended.

Drinking: 

Water is safe to drink.

Hopleaf is a dark beer.

Cisk is a light beer.

Kinnie an [odd] but very pleasant and thirst quenching soft drink.

Law & Order: 

The police carry guns.

Crime - Take the usual precautions, but don't worry too much.

Healthcare: 

196 is the emergency number.

Wildlife: 

Some guard dogs. Some other re-enactors.
