Wednesday, 25 September 1811
On the 25th of September 1811 the battle of El Bodon was fought between the Allied forces commanded by General Picton and a cavalry force of 2,500 led by General Montbrun.
When Montbruns cavalry attacked Pictons few squadrons were overwhelmed, his Portuguese artillery battery was over run and things were quite desperate until the 5th Foot attacked up hill. Led by Major Ridge the 5th pushed up hill, dispersed a French dragoon reg't and re-captured the Portuguese guns.
Picton was able to withdraw his men in good order. Victory was claimed by the Allies.
