Marshall Davouts III Corp with 20,000 men faced Arch Duke Charles and an Austrian army of around 75,000 at the Battle of Eckmuhl,[Eggmuhl].
Charles opened hostilities and sheer weight of numbers pushed Davout back. By the afternoon Lannes Corp had come to Davouts aid and the troops of Wurttemberg and Bavaria had taken several key points.
Charles retreated leaving 7,000 dead and 5,000 prisoners.
