Thursday, 29 December 1808
On the 29th of December a cavalry action was fought at Benevente. General Lefebvre-Desnouettes led his Chasseur a cheval in pursuit of General Moores retreating army. Despite a river bridge being destroyed by the British, a ford was found and the French troops pushed onwards. They were met by Lord Paget and the Hussars of the Kings German Legion along with the 7th,10th and 18th Hussars. Pagets casualties were less than 20, those of the French around 150, most of whom,[including Lefebvre-Desnouettes] were taken prisnor.
Lord Pagets victory was watched from the Southern bank by Napoleon.
