Monday, 21 October 1805
When a French marksman positioned in the mizen-top of 'Redoubtable' fired at a Royal Navy Officer below on the deck of HMS Victory. The ball struck his left epaulette and Nelson fell. Three men raised him. "They have done for me at last Hardy," he said. "I hope not !" replied Hardy. "Yes. My backbone is shot through.", and with that Nelson was carried down to the Cockpit. He used a handkerchief to cover his face and stars so that the crew might not see thier Admiral wounded and so take alarm.
Shot at about quarter past one he died at half past four. His last words were..'Thank God, I have done my duty."
